Progressives are very angry at the health care bill that is coming out of the Senate and for very good reason. It doesn’t have a Public Option, not even a weak one, and it has been stripped of the Medicare compromise. It seems as though we are getting nothing for having won the White House and both houses of Congress.
One thing we can say about the Bush Administration is that they kept their team in line. His administration faced very little opposition from inside the Republican Party. But that is precisely why for many us the Bush years are a failure.

Under the House bill, every American would be required to carry
health insurance. The justification for this mandate is simple enough.
By forcing everyone in the country to purchase insurance, including the
young and healthy, insurance pools will be larger, risk will be spread
more evenly, and costs will be lowered for everyone. If opts not be
covered, they will still be required to help offset the costs via an
individual mandate tax (roughly 2.5 percent of income).

I have no qualms about reminding many of you that just over a week ago you were clamoring for President Obama to be more assertive re: health care reform. You wanted him to call the elephant people names, pimp slap the recalcitrant Dems and make reform happen. You were tired of him trying to carry out the necessary reforms with bi-partisan support.
