Greatest Quarterbacks

24 February 2009 229 views No Comment

This was actually an easy list to comprise. I just asked myself a simple question: with two minutes left in the biggest game of the year, which QB do I want running my offense? That got me my top three. From then I had to work on my football instincts and what I’ve seen and heard over the years. Some great names didn’t make the list. In my opinion, Fran Tarkenton, Bart Starr and “Broadway” Joe are great but don’t cut the mustard. I really wanted to put Warren Moon on the list but I just couldn’t do it.

UPDATE: Ok, By popular demand and for my sanity, I have to put Warren Moon and Doug Williams on the ‘Honorable Mentions’ list. Black quarterbacks got the short end of the stick for a long time in the NFL… now they are all the rage. What happened to Doug Williams was no short of a tragedy. Win a Super Bowl and don’t play the next year. Something is wrong with that picture. But here they are folks…

The Quarterbacks

1. John Elway – Is there a greater quarterback that can run a two-minute offense? I don’t think so. His arm strength, accuracy and mobility made him almost impossible to stop.

2. Joe Montana – He wasn’t that fast. He wasn’t that strong. He wasn’t that big. But what he was… was a winner. He ran his offense to perfection. He was just elusive enough to give his receivers that extra second they needed to get into the open field.
3. Brett Farve – One game against my beloved Bears, Brett rolled to his left, stopped a yard short of the sideline, squared up and threw a rocket to Antonio Freeman from the 20 yard line for a touchdown. Not a fantastic play but it defined his arm strength. He takes a lot of chance, but that’s what great folks do.
4. Dan Marino – Too bad he never won a Super Bowl. Had he ever been given a running game maybe that would have changed things.
5. Payton Manning – Just might end up being one of the best ever – but he will need to win a couple of Super Bowls and do better in the red zone.
6. Johnny Unitas – I never saw him play so I have to put him here on reputation and stats.
7. Steve Young – Can you believe the 49ers had him sitting on the bench? They have two great QB’s in the same era and my Bears haven’t seen one in two generations.
8. Terry Bradshaw – He was the QB of my favorite team as a child.
9. Troy Aikman – I hate Dallas but I have to give Troy his due. He was smart and had a Strong Arm.
10. Dan Fouts – I just remember him throwing the ball all over the field. I can’t believe that there was a time when I was a fan of the San Diego Chargers.
