NAACP Crashes Tea Party?

I’m a little conflicted about the resolution the NAACP issued regarding the racism of the Tea Party. On one hand, we are talking about the NAACP which is something that rarely happens. On the other hand, if this is the only thing about the conference we are discussing, doesn’t that say something about the lack of depth coming out of the NAACP?
The NAACP is struggling with relevancy and is having a hard time attracting younger people to their cause. But the problem is that no one can really define their …

BP Will Pay or Will They?

We’ve heard President Obama, Governor Jindal and a host of other government officials state emphatically that BP will pay for the cleanup of the Gulf. BP’s CEO, Tony Hayword has himself expressed BP’s intention of paying for the entire cost of the cleanup. It sounds nice but there is a huge caveat in those statements. The economic cost of this spill goes far beyond cleaning the oil off the beaches.

There is the economic impact on the fishing and tourism industries. How does BP plan to make those entities whole? That is not part of the cleanup cost. What of the damage to wildlife and ecology where we cannot even begin to calculate. I’m sure BP is planning on taking a page from the Exxon playbook where they dragged the lawsuit on so long to where they paid only a portion of the damages awarded to the victim of the Exxon Valdez spill.

The Border’s Slippery Slope

The good folks of Arizona want the rest of the country to believe that their new immigration law is Constitutional and will certainly not lead to racial profiling. They are doing their best to communicate how law-abiding Mexicans have nothing to worry about as long as they are wearing the right type of shoes or dressed appropriately American. Now, I for one have not learned to determine someone’s citizenship based on their shoes. Hell, the airlines can’t even stop a would-be terrorist from getting on a plane with explosives in their shoes.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Relief workers began handing out women-only food coupons, launching a new phase of what they hope will be less cutthroat aid distribution to ensure that families and the weak get supplies following Haiti’s devastating earthquake.

The Myth of the Split Black Vote

For months we have heard the cry of a split with the black vote with regards to the Cook County Board President’s race. The prognosticators suggested that fielding multiple black candidates would all but guarantee victory for the lone white candidate. This may have been true in the past but politics have changed over the past decade and politicians wage campaigns on old paradigms at their peril.
